Lawmakers began weighing ways Monday to prevent more tragedies on college campuses in a hastily convened Senate hearing a week after the shootings in Virginia. The hearing explored the adequacy of campuses' mental health resources, security plans and communications systems.

50% seems high. That's really depressing.

Accidental or black humour Beevine?
94% report feeling overwhelmed... I wonder if that depends how close to exams the survey was done.

Why is anyone surprised?
It wouldn't be as stressful if most college kids knew what real life was all about. However they are stuck in their bubble. A bubble their parents help put them in.

i actually agree with this article. i am a college student and there is such a high standard for people now to excel that living up to others expectations is hard. I am a premed student and t is hard to get good grades and do other activities and still have a social life.

premed - I'm impressed. I don't think you're supposed to have a social or any other life ;-)

If you're going to be cutting up my brain or any of that ilk, you better not have a social life.

Even so, it is really psychologically taxing on us medical school hopefuls. I do not have a social life nor desire an active one really, but I just want a week of a true break from any work. I have been studying (and doing related things - working) non-stop for literally over a year and I cannot begin to describe how emotionally taxing it is. Much of or premed process has turned into a game of 'who can take the psychological pressure the best'. My last vacation was in August 2007 for three weeks... It really is such a depressing game we're forced to play - even for the ones that will end up matriculating to medical school... Just wanted to share that with you. Take care.
While feeling continual depression is obviously not healthy,
He said that 94 percent of students reported feeling overwhelmed by all they have to do, and that nearly 50 percent reported having felt so depressed that it was difficult to function.
Feeling overwhelmed or even extremely overwhelmed from time to time is nothing abnormal in college. It's part of adjusting to the demands of a difficult curriculum (as opposed to most high schools now), adjusting to growing up, living on your own etc. etc. I'd venture to say that those numbers have probably always been that high.

Probably swinging wildly between depressed/stressed <--> euphoric depending on how close to exams and how long since the last party? I sure hope so anyway.

The school I went to had one of the highest suicide rates in the country at the time. In fact, it was so bad that the tallest dorm on campus had a twelve-foot plexiglas wall around the edge of the roof to try to prevent students from jumping off. Every week or so in the school paper, there were reports of students being hospitalized for suicide attempts.
It doesn't surprise me that 50% of college students have had trouble functioning due to depression at some point or other. It does, however, surprise me greatly that this statistic comes as a surprise to anyone. We've all either been there or known people who had trouble hanging on.

Good lord - I hope there was counselling available as well.

IMHO, there should be only three laws -- and no more lawmakers: Good thoughts, words and deeds.
No police, terrorists, taxes, soldiers or politicians.
