Jeremy Hernandez saved a group of school children at the bridge collapse and became a hero. After the news publicized the fact that he couldn't afford college, people start sending him donations and other help. President Bush's staff want a photo shoot with him, but were turned down.
Good for him. A photo op with a publicity whoring president would have tarnished his selfless act of heroism.
Come on now Beevine, don't mince words. If you have an oppion just come out and say it!

"Good for him" is right!
Turning down Dubya's pathetic grab at self-glorification makes the guy a bigger hero in my book!
What an ugly word, whore.
I am disappointed that the article didn't go on to answer, why he turned down the photo-op.
It may be that he is feeling overwhelmed by the attention, and that appearing with the pres. would increase the undesired attention. He did seem concerned that co-workers weren't receiving as many accolades.
No matter, really. The young man reacted wonderfully in a time of crisis.
I'd say he turned down the photo op because the government may not have helped him when he needed some cash to attend college...
That or he shuns the label of hero.
He reacted well in a stressful situation, maybe that's all he wants to be known for.

how i would love to shake his hand !!!! bush is indeed a publicity whore. as his world crumbles further, watch him use his office to bolster his sagging fortunes. he will try to use anything and anyone to whitewash his image. and he was elected twice!!!
luv,
ron
No doubt. Jogging with Iraq amputees seems to be another one of his favorite activities.
Darn it, Beevine!
I couldn't pull up the image. I'm sure it's one of those pictures that's worth a thousand words, too!
:-O
What a lovely, heartwarming story. Makes one feel good to be human! He seems to have a pretty shrewd head too, resisting the photocall with insincere people who just want to use him. Good luck to him.
Thanks for the seed, Beevine.
Yes Beevine, they guy's clearly got class.
I am now even more impressed by this young man.
Can someone clip it to the Sweet Fennel group?
I have clipped it Thura, thanks for suggesting.
he left town for northern Minnesota late on Friday, overwhelmed by the attention and concerned that his co-workers were being overlooked.
Good for him. It's good to see someone who can do a good deed and then not look for all the attention they can get.
We need more people like this.
I agree. Mr. Hernandez was just doing what's right. He wasn't trying to be a hero, and turning down the president shows it. I just think it's wonderful he's able to finish college now.
Hi beevine thats how true hero's behave, the false ones try to be senator or the president, I am saluting this guy as I know he is the real thing H.E.R.O
I would have asked for a photo op surrounded by anti-war activists asking questions.
This young man must be a TERRORIST LOVER! He obviously hates Bush, which makes him anti-American, which also means he wants the United States to LOSE THE WAR!
Sarcasm off.
Actually my first thought was that he should have said yes and when the cameras were around sounded off on bush in the worst way. Then the thought occured that they probably had him sign a paper saying he wouldn't do something like that or he would be subject to the status of an enemy combatant.
No, that would be far less classy. I'd rather see him turn it down entirely than accept it only to use it as a platform for his own agenda. Too many others are already doing that.
Turning it down was the right move. He'll be far more respected this way.
You are making the assumption that he said "Nope" out of a dislike of Bush rather than a desire to avoid further publicity for himself. For all you know he might be a huge Bush supporter.
This humble courageous young man did a very heroic deed......that Hernandez chooses not to step into the spotlight as some kind of self-proclaimed hero by posing with our President is not in any way a slap in the face to our President....though nice try with the spin here. True heros often dodge publicity.
not in any way a slap in the face to our President....
BWWAAAHAHA!!! Dream on
Exactly, Jim--even Bush's own party doesn't want to be seen with him, let alone a true hero.
Beevine: PS - the true headline of this article reads: Bridge Hero Gets Offer: Paid Tuition
What do you mean "true" headline. You mean "original" headline?
But there's nothing on Newsvine that says you have to use the original headline. You can write any headline that you believe brings out the salient points of any story.
Yeah AND thats the MSM doing it's corporate masters job. You dont hear anywhere where a young man turned down a photo opportunity with the pres.
Or bush's power grab on the wiretaps
People need to wake up and smell the media, it stinks and it isnt liberal versus conservative.
It is corporate vs public interest.
What do you mean "true" headline. You mean "original" headline?
I would say, "more accurate with respect to the content of the article" headline. The seeder chose to emphasize the final sentence of the article, ignoring the bulk of it which had nothing to do with this headline. I would suggest that the seeder chose this more sensationalistic headline out of antipathy for the president, not out of respect for it's accuracy.

So? He seeded the story, and this was the part that interested him. He didn't make up a headline, he chose an actual aspect of the story to highlight. We've got people seeding idiocy from Anne Coulter and if people will defend her trash talk and generalizations -- I don't see why someone can't seed a legit story and choose a legit title based on an actual sentence from that story.
Ditto - and I checked into that Ann Coulter group hug. It was enlightening as well as interesting. Much insight into the group offering the hug.
Awesome. And it's such a wonderfully Minnesotan response as well, no venom, no long lectures as to why he won't go, no political tirades, just "Nope. Goin' fishin'."
He defiantly has his priorities straight.
A woman offered Alvin York $25,000 to father her child. He turned her down. He never used his Congressional Metal of Honor to enrich himself.
What did she look like? Just kidding. I'm shallow that way. Just a man whore after all.
There's a real hero, a very rare breed indeed.
This guy has more strength of character and honor then the President, who just wants to use him to boaster his own lack of the same. It's People like this is what Makes me proud to be an American.
Personally, I don't know or care what Hernandez's motives were for turning down the photo op. But I am delighted to hear that President Bush has been prevented from coopting at least one person's heroic actions for a stage prop to glorify himself. Firemen and police in New York after 9/11, the men on board the aircraft carrier, the soldiers in the mess hall on Thanksgiving 2003, rescue workers in New Orleans -- he's used them all as extras in the little films about his own greatness, and it's nauseating.
